Reference: The use of IoT technology in Smart Viticulture

Smart viticulture aims to maximize the vineyards oenological potential. This is particularly true in regions where high-quality standards in the production of wine justify the adoption of site-specific management practices based on Internet of Things technology to increase both quality and yield simultaneously. The purpose of this paper resides in the introduction of a new project, DISAVIT, that uses various sensors technologies to support the management of vineyards, to enable production efficiency and to improve yield quality while reducing the impact on the environment. The sensors primary purpose is to facilitate the calculation of various parameters, taking into account weather conditions, light and radiation levels, soil morphology, fertilizer presence, plant and fruit growth and development alongside other environmental parameters required to improve crop quality and avoid crop losses. The collected data will be sent to the Internet generating MQTT messages through the usage of the Libelium platform Smart Agriculture Xtreme and an IoT gateway called Meshlium. Also with the use of sensors it will be easy to determine the requirements for further development of a harmonized monitoring/feedback system for quality, covering technical validation and impact procedures. The paper addresses also an experimental part that targets the assessment of the relevant parameters for viticulture.
