The VitiSynth database has two types of Entries (Reviews and Synths). Reviews are specifically for reviewing new research papers, books and other publications. Synths are James insights into a specific topic, like sections in a textbook. Attached to each Synth is a Discussion where you can discuss the specific topic contained in the Synth. The Synths have clearly defined and structured titles (using the same structure as the Factors, see below) so you can drill down to the level of specificity required. Here is an example:

Chardonnay blanc has the following Synths- Cultivar Synth:Chardonnay Blanc and Cultivar Synth:Chardonnay Blanc:Clones:(one Synth for each clone)

For each new Entry, the Interactions between very precise and specific Factors are documented, like a very detailed form of relational indexing. Factors are structured in the same way as Entry titles. This structure allows you to select a level of specificity for your searches. Here is the corresponding Chardonnay Blanc Factor structure:

Note: If your Search returns too many results then you can re select a more specific level. If the Search does not return any results try making a Factor less specific.

You can then use the Advanced Interaction Search to find the information or answer you need. Here are the steps:

  1. Select Factors that are of interest
  2. Nominate to find matches within 1 specific Interaction (and nominate to display either matching Interactions or Entries containing matches) or across all Interactions within an Entry by clicking on the relevant radio button
  3. Click submit

You can then review the list of matching Interactions or Entries and use the links to explore the detail.

There is also a specialised Select Cultivar or Rootstock by Phenology option in the Advanced Interaction Search. If you select this button only Vine:Phenology Factors will be displayed for selection. Here are the steps:

  1. Click on the Select Cultivar or Rootstock by Phenology radio button
  2. Select phenology Factors (characteristics) and the minimum level that is required. You can select up to 10 different characteristics
  3. Click submit
  4. Cultivar Synths matching all of the desired minimum levels will then be returned

The database itself has four main Interaction Primary Groups- Environment, Management, Vine and Wine. With each new Entry into VitiSynth (whether it be a Review or Synth) the Interactions between the environment, human behaviour (management), the vine and the wine are factorised. The database also contains a number of Classification Primary Groups- Cultivars & Rootstocks, Region, Products etc. In these areas the primary names for all of the building blocks are controlled. This has been done to minimise the potential for synonym use, simplify factor selection and to make it easier to update the database if nomenclature changes.

The Colons (:) delineate the level of specificity, for example Region:Northern hemisphere:France:Champagne:Epernay is more specific than Region:Northern hemisphere:France or Region:Northern hemisphere:France:Champagne.

The Factors are built in the following order:

  • For Environment, Vine and Wine- Location or component:Characteristic:Sub Characteristic:Range:Value
  • For Management- Action group:Specific action:Characteristic:Range:Value
  • For Cultivar & Rootstocks- Genus:Species:CultivarRootstock:Clone
  • For Regions- Country:State:Region:Subregion (or area):Vineyard:Block:Vine

The structure of Entry titles and Factors minimises the potential for various terms to be used for the same thing (which would impede the accuracy of searching). Wherever possible we have used the official terminology. However in many situations there is no official, international nomenclature or standardised terminology i.e. soil classification, grapevine growth stages, maturity measurement units. In these circumstances we have either developed a combined scheme or defined temporary schemes based on the most recognised English language term that also translates best to other key languages.

For example, to the best of our knowledge there is no official definition of yield levels- what one person considers low yield might be considered high yield by someone else, yet expressing yield in these terms is often done by researchers and industry professionals. In this situation we have set thresholds for different levels of yield and provided a descriptor based on data wherever possible i.e. VineEffect:Actual:Yield:03 Low (between 5-10t/ha, 2-4t/acre, 0.5-1kg/m2, 35-70 hL/ha) with the "Low" descriptor allocated based on data on worldwide yield levels.

This will no doubt generate discussion and that is great because we can do that in the relevant Synth- Vine Synth:Vine:Yield:Thresholds.

One of the advantages of the database is if a change in terminology is validated or a new standard is released it is very easy to incorporate. You will notice that we have also included equivalent ranges in other commonly used units. This has been done to assist people in selecting Factors. Where an actual value is recorded it is recorded in the VitiSynth standard units (unless otherwise stated). This has been done to aid comparison of data sets and allow for easier exporting for analysis.
